The CPRA's 2006 rodeo season kicked off with the Medicine Hat Spring Rodeo, held March 10-12.
The 2005 champion team roping duo of Travis Gallais (Olds) and Rocky Dallyn (Nanton) started this season right where they finished off their last one, in first place.
They beat out 28 other teams with a 5.2-second effort, winning $1,336 apiece, taking top spots in the first Canadian standings of the year.
From Peers, Levi Harbin won in the saddle bronc category.
Awards
Other winners in Medicine Hat include: Dan Black (Maple Creek, SK.) who won the saddle bronc riding and $1,495 after an 83-point ride on Kesler's Smiling Cat.
Don McLeod (Hanna) as the best bareback rider on two head, taking home a total of $1,678.
Blade Young was 84 points on Kesler's Talespin, worth $1,703.
Stacy Cornet (Kyle, SK.) as the fastest tie-down roper, winning $1,708 for his 8.1-seconds worth of work.
Gene Wiart (Alliance, AB.) as the quickest steer wrestler, with a 4.2-second run, winning $2,227.
And four time CCA champion barrel racer Teri Kay Leibrand (Belt, MT) won the barrel racing with her blazing run of 13.45 seconds, worth $1,644.
West of the Rockies finals moves
The West of the Rockies Finals Rodeo is moving to Prince George, B.C.
The event -- a culmination of the 14 CPRA professional rodeos held within the province of British Columbia each year-will be held at the CN Centre in Prince George, Oct. 13-15.
For the past two years, the event took place in Penticton, B.C.
Proceeds from the event will go to the Northland Dodge Chrysler Healthy
Children's Fund. This fund was created to help build a new children's pediatric ward at the Prince George Regional Hospital.
The event will feature $24,000 in prize money as well as championship rodeo buckles, which will be presented to the 2006 champions on Oct. 15 at the Treasure Cove Casino Show Lounge.
It is anticipated that the economic impact of hosting this West of the Rockies Finals Rodeo will be between $500,000 and $800,000 for the City of Prince George.
